Most workers join a union for the industry-standard wages and benefits. Often workers join a union due to inadequate jobsite safety. Accessing training is another reason workers seek to be represented by a union. When a majority of workers with a special set of skills are organized, it is possible to advance wages and benefits. Conversely when the number of organized workers is low in a market area, workers have less ability to influence wages. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters was established in 1881 and had its first local in British Columbia in 1883. The UBC has been representing workers longer than any other construction union in B.C.
