Yarmouth Association for Community Residential Options (YACRO) exists to support, in residential settings, people with disabilities. We believe that everyone has a right to live in the community and be regarded as individuals, deserving of the opportunity to grow and develop to their fullest potential, and to find and be included in the life of their community. The people we support are often very vulnerable. Sometimes this vulnerability has evolved from having very little or no control in their lives, being taught to be compliant in all aspects of daily living and developing very little sense of personal capabilities. Our mandate is to discover and provide the supports required to assist people in finding their own sense of personal power. Due to the vulnerability of the people we support, we must make every effort to provide a stable environment where people feel at home, safe, and can learn to trust the people around them. It is only in this type of environment that people can be encouraged to explore and become aware of their potential as human beings.

We have been welcoming visitors ashore since 1970, always with the simple vision of offering others a special kind of coastal destination; a warm and inspired place to create treasured waterside memories with loved ones. Nearly 50 years later, Oak Island Resort & Conference Centre is still doing just that. We may have grown over the years, but our shores haven’t changed, the views still take our breath away and our vision is the same. We’re proud of our south shore heritage and way of life, and it still puts a smile on our face to give our guests a Nova Scotia experience like no other. Our resort is set overlooking the many tiny islands of beautiful Mahone Bay – an area overflowing with dramatic stories of swashbucklers, sailors – and a pirate’s buried treasure. Originally called The Long Boat Inn with just 32 rooms, a boat house and a glass-walled dining room for scenic eating, Oak Island Resort & Conference Centre of today has evolved into a year-round, full-service retreat with sweeping coastal vistas, countless amenities and activities, a bustling marina, the tranquil Aqua Spa and Hair Salon – and warm Nova Scotian hospitality – that attracts visitors from all over the world. In fact, it’s our friendly east coast service that keeps guests returning again and again. Our crew is ready to welcome you, or welcome you back, to our home by the sea, with a vacation experience you will remember forever.
